I expect to have the new Protest
of Reality album out by the end of summer. I've finished quite a bit of
material so far, and much of the remainder should be done within the next
month or two. It's definitely heading in a direction much different from the
other albums; it's not quite what I originally aimed for but nonetheless I
feel it's very solid work and I'm proud of it. Expect a few website changes
around the end of spring/early summer.
Once I get that album out, I
intend to work on my next classical piano album. I have a significant body of
work and sketches that have collected over the years, as well as what I
composed during my college studies. I suspect a lot of that will end up on
the album. Of course with music, expectations and results tend to differ, so
we'll see what happens. I hope to have that one out by the end of 2009.
I've also been working on a novel
off and on - the work is pretty abstract at this point. I've been writing it
in stream of consciousness mode so far. I'll be doing some brainstorming soon
to try and get more structure and direction into it. I'll see how that goes.
Thanks for stopping by the site. I know I don't update
often, but I appreciate the support I've received in the past and continue to
receive now.

PROTEST OF REALITY
IS RETURNING!
Four “rough draft” tracks are finished, and more are on the way!
05-02-2007
On Saturday, May 12th, I will be performing in the Willamette
University Senior Honors Recital. It
is at 2:30 PM in Hudson Hall, features other student musicians, and is free.
04-20-2007
Back in March, I was interviewed by the Willamette University
Collegian student newspaper as part
of an article about student art and music projects. A brief segment on my work Aural Photography is included at this
link.
04-18-2007
Thank you to all who came to my lecture this afternoon! I really appreciate the support!
For those of you unable to
attend the event, I gave a lecture as part of Willamette University’s
Student Scholarship Recognition Day.
During the lecture I discussed my recent chamber orchestra work Aural Photography. Right now, it looks like the Salem Chamber
Orchestra may play the piece during their 2007-2008 season. Within the next few months, I also plan to
rescore the work in piano format. The
piano version will likely surface on my next classical album.
10-4-2006
Next Tuesday, October 10th, I perform Benjamin Lees’ Toccata during the weekly music
student recital (11:30 AM, Hudson Hall).
After this will be a short “convo etiquette”
skit.
9-13-2006
A few months back, I performed Gabriel Fauré’s
Theme and Variations (op. 73). Yesterday on the 12th, I
performed some selections from the same piece. I didn’t know for sure that I was
performing until the day before, so preparing was certainly an interesting
experience. It turned out well though,
and the audience really enjoyed it.
I’m scheduled for another performance of another piece on October 10th,
and I will be making at least one more appearance in addition to that before
the end of the year. More news to
come…
5-16-2006
Clips from my performance last month are up at MP3.com.au. Enjoy!
4-26-2006
This morning I
performed Theme and Variations in C#
Minor (Op. 73) by Gabriel Faure at the weekly student
recital. It went really well. Everyone liked it, and the
recording turned out great. I played it by memory, I was really
prepared for it, and there I got a big adrenaline rush out of it. I'll
post some clips of it when I get a chance.
4-10-2006
I’ve decided to make some minor changes to portions of the site. I’ll be doing this over the next few weeks.
4-3-2006
I am scheduled to perform Gabriel Faure’s Theme and Variations in C# minor, Opus 73, during the weekly
student recital on Wednesday, April 26th. The recital is free and features other
student performers. It begins at 10:20
AM. More details are available under
the “shows” section.
3-1-2006
I am tentatively scheduled for a performance on April 26th. I’ll post more information as the day gets
closer.
12-7-2005
Clips from my
performance on the 16th are available at http://www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=16123. The file is labeled as
"Clips from November 16, 2005 Performance." Enjoy!
11-9-2005
This morning I
performed three contemporary piano works as part of the weekly Willamette University student convocation. The
performance went very well. I may make clips of the recording available
online soon.
11-9-2005
Next Wednesday,
November 16, at 10:20 AM, I will be performing three contemporary piano
works. It will be part of the weekly Willamette University
student convocation in Hudson Hall, which is free and open to whoever chooses
to come. My performance will last about ten minutes, and there will be other
student performers as well.
6-12-2005
The track Broken Rose, one of the singles from my album The Reign,
is featured on a compilation! The First Quarter 2005 Soft Rock/Easy Listening
compilation by Kid Antrim Music (www.kidantrimmusic.com) is not availble to the
general public. It does, however, get sent to a number of record labels and
radio stations. If there is a classical radio station in your area, call it
to see if they carry the track and request to hear Broken Rose on the
air!
4-6-2005
This morning at the weekly music student convocation at Willamette University, I performed three pieces
by J.S. Bach - Invention in f minor, Invention in e minor, and Sinfonia in f minor.
This afternoon, the Cuarteto Latinoamericano of Mexico City
performed my recently composed work Sonata No. 1 for String Quartet as
part of their 'residency' at Willamette
University. The reading
went well and the piece received a good amount of fanfare given the small
crowd.
Neither of today's events will be posted as free downloads
at this point. However, there are still free downloads of the singles both Lost
and The Reign.
3-30-2005
The time of the Cuarteto Latinoamericano reading of Sonata No. 1 for String
Quartet has been moved to 1 PM. This will last for two hours. Two other
student composers, John Englund and Jonathan Hicks,
will also have string quartets premiered. On Friday, April 8, the quartet
will be performing at 8 PM in Hudson Hall at Willamette University.
At that concert they will be performing works by other contemporary
musicians.
3-9-2005
UPCOMING EVENTS:
April 6, 2005
At 10:20 AM on
Wednesday the 6th, I will be performing in Hudson Hall at Willamette University's weekly music student
recital. The exact line-up has not been decided yet, so I don't know the
exact time I will perform. I will be playing two J.S. Bach inventions and a sinfonia, also by J.S. Bach. It will be a short
performance and the weekly event features a number of other student
musicians, but it is free should anyone in the area choose to attend.
At 1:30 PM on the same day the Cuarteto
Latinoamericano will be visiting Willamette University
and will be performing a number of works. Among the works that will be played
is a sonata movement for string quartet that I have been working on. This
event takes place in Hudson Hall and is free as well.
NEW REVIEW:
Diane Steinmeyer wrote this review of the album
The Reign on March 16, 2005:
Composer and performer, Kevin Rancik, is someone
to definitely keep an eye on for the future of piano and music in the coming
decade. His royal opus, "The Reign," is full of soft dulcet tones
mixed with dark & haunting undertones. Each composition moves into the
next with an eerie yet upbeat progression that instills a trancelike state
into the listener. Rancik's strange yet beautiful
melodies are like sweet & sour candy for the ears.
12-02-2004
The recording of my
November 17th performance is available here:
http://willamette.edu/~mbergh/11-17-04%20Convo/07.%20Sonata%20in%20G%20Major.mp3
11-24-2004
On the 17th,
I performed the Sonatina in G Major (Op.
20 No.2) by Friedrich Kuhlau during the Willamette University weekly music convocation.
All three movements were performed by memory, and the reception the piece
received was amazing! People responded extremely well to it and all of the
work that was put into it was definitely well worth the effort!

Broken Rose has entered two more
charts at BeSonic.com! The track is now on their American and Italian
classical charts!
07-15-2004
Broken Rose, the third single from The
Reign, is a featured track in BeSonic's music section! "Scout"
Phillip E. Hardy has this to say about the piece:
"This modern classical piano composition offers a
simple but nicely played melody. The quick waltzing tempo offers the listener
both drama and delicacy."
This comment can be accessed under the website's
"music" section, or by going there and clicking on Hardy's name. Broken
Rose has already debuted at #32 on the French weekly classical charts at
that site as well!
07-13-2004
The third single
from Rancik's second classical album The Reign
has been released!
The track Broken Rose is available on-line at the sites given at the
bottom of this page. Below is a short description of this awesome
single...and all downloads of it are free! So spread the word and make sure
to give some feedback on the single!
Taking a good deal of inspiration from the children's
piece and Italian dance Tarantella, Broken Rose has a Mediterranian feel and an Italian flair. Despite the
simplicity of the melody, the piece conveys strong emotion and includes
surprising dynamic contrasts. In terms of the album's storyline, Broken
Rose is the point at which mourning for a fallen loved one takes place.
The good times spent with them are remembered and their memory is honored and
cherished.
